While wood patio furniture can be made of virtually any wood imaginable, the vast majority of wood patio furniture is made from three woods: red cedar, northern white cedar and teak.
Each of these has their own unique qualities. The type of wood you choose depends largely on your own personal tastes as well as your locale. Some woods respond better to different climates, so they will age better and last longer.
Cedar has been the choice of homeowners for years when it comes to wood patio furniture. The best thing about cedar is that it doesn't easily decay or rot. Even though it's a relatively lightweight wood, it has a lot of character and can fend off the weather with ease.
Northern white cedar won't warp or shrink no matter what the weather is like in your area. Red cedar won't warp either, if it is cut on the grain. While northern white cedar is a quality material, it won't last quite as long as red cedar. The latter contains acidic tannins that act as a natural preservative. However, with a couple coats of preservative, white northern cedar wood patio furniture will last a long time. In fact, you may tire of it long before it falls apart on you.
Both of these types of cedar won't shrink over time. They will tend to crack a bit with time. This is natural and won't really affect the lifespan of your wood patio furniture. In your mind, it's a lazy, summer day in 1946 in Squam Lake, New Hampshire. Vacationing families glide along the placid lake aboard their boats, and children just like you laugh as they explore the mysterious creatures at the water's edge. It's just the scene that Thomas Lee must have had in mind when he first invented the Westport Adirondack chair back in 1903. Lee was on vacation at his summer cottage in Westport, New York, when he came up with the design for a chair with wide armrests and a slanted back and seat. Such a design was already in use by people in the Adirondack Mountains, located about 10 miles west of Lee's cottage in Westport. The slanted position of the chairs enabled people to sit upright even when on a steep hill.
Though there were other chairs of a similar construction already in use, Lee's creation became the standard. Lee's hunting friend, Harry Bunnell, patented the chair in 1905 and began to sell it to the public. Though Lee's invention is known as the Westport chair, there can be no doubt that it is the forerunner of the classic Adirondack chair. The two are extremely similar in structure, with the main difference being the Adirondack chair's smaller slats.
Today, the Adirondack chair is an American classic, a symbol of comfort, and for some, a reminder of an age of innocence when they would curl up in the chairs with their mother or father and listen to stories being told under a blanket of stars.

Remember to keep your purpose in mind throughout the entire process. While picking each piece, ask yourself if it lends to your original intent. That way, your entire outdoor area will keep a consistent feeling.
